Hoping to win its fifth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference league title, the Webster University baseball team split with Greenville College (IL), winning 8-0 & losing 2-1, to open the 2011 SLIAC season. David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) picked up his third win, a two-hit shutout, and Tom Henke (JR, Forest Park CC) drove in four runs with a home run and double in the opener.
Mueller ran his record to 3-0 with his first shutout of the season, and second in his career as a Gorlok. Mueller walked none, and struck out seven as he lowered his ERA to 1.07. Henke keyed two three-run innings for Webster, hitting a two-run homer in the fourth, and doubling in two in the fifth. Webster stole six bases on the game and have 59 on the season.
In the nightcap, Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) staked the Gorloks to a 1-0 first-inning lead with a leadoff double. Stevenson scored on an errant throw into left field as he stole third base. The steal was his 15th on the season, in 16 attempts. The Panthers, bounced two doubles off the left field wall in taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning, and that is all they would need. Stevenson's hit turned out to be the only one for the Gorloks in the contest.
Freshman Zach Schneider (Warrren Township HS, IL) made his fourth start on the season and saw his record fall to 1-3, as Gorlok run support has been scarce with him on the mound. Schneider allowed five hits and struck out seven in six solide innings of work. He has struck out 29 in 26.2 innings of work and has a stingy 2.03 ERA.
Webster is 1-1 in the SLIAC, and 8-4 overall. The Gorloks travel to Carlinville, IL, on April 2 to face Blackburn College. Blackburn travels to GCS Ballpark on April 3 for a double-header.
SCHEDULE CHANGES: Webster has scheduled a single game at Washington University on April 15, and a double-header at Illinois Wesleyan University on April 28
