Gorloks' Comeback Tempered by Game Two Loss

Webster Splits with Westminster

Down 7-0 in the sixth inning, the Webster University men's baseball team came from behind to beat Westminster College, 13-9, in 10 innings in the first game of a double-header.  The Gorloks had the tables turned on them in game two, as the Blue Jays came from behind in the seventh inning to win, 4-3.  The loss, at Fulton, MO, on April 12, snapped Webster's win streak in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at nine.

In game one, the Gorloks had chipped the deficit to 8-3 as they batted in the top of the seventh.  With two down and one on, the Gorloks made their move.  Joe Gerace (FR, Oak Park-River Forest HS, IL) homered to cut the lead to 8-5.  Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) followed with a solo shot to make it 8-6.  After a walk and an error, Tom Henke (JR, Forest Park CC) hit a two-run single to tie it a 8-8.

After exchanging runs in the ninth, Webster erupted in the 10th.  The Gorloks parlayed four walks and two hits into four runs.  Jason Gray (JR, North Central CC, MO) pitched the final five innings, giving up a lone run while pitching around four hits and five walks.  Gray won his second game of the year and is 2-0.

Steve Dooley (SO, Florissant Valley CC) started game two and gave up three hits and three walks, while allowing just one run.  Webster scored single tallies in three different innings to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.  Three walks and a hit batsman put the Gorloks in a deep hole, and a one-out hit made it a winner for the Blue Jays.

Henke was four for nine on the night, with three runs batted in.  Gerace was three for seven with three runs scored and three RBIs.

The Gorloks are 9-2 in the SLIAC and 16-5 overall.  Webster has a single game on April 15 at Washington University.  The Gorloks the host Eureka College for a three game set on April 16-17.  The two teams play a single game on April 16 at GCS Ballpark, followed by a double-header on the 17th.
