The Webster University baseball team jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but back to back two-run innings by Washington University cost them the game as the Bears won, 5-4, on April 14, at the Hilltop. Zach Schneider (FR, Warren Township HS, IL) started and took the loss for the Gorloks, pitching seven innings, allowing seven hits, striking out six, while giving up five runs, four of them earned.
Schneider was sailing along, retiring the first seven Bears in the game. He allowed three hits, including a solo HR, through the end of five. But Washington U. scraped two runs together in the sixth, aided by a Webster error, to pull even at 3-3. The Webster defense played a part in two more Bear runs in the seventh as the Gorloks settled for one out on a potential inning-ending double-play ball. A two-out single, then a two-run double, gave the Bears a 5-3 lead.
The Gorloks picked up a run in the top of the ninth on a Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS) single, but a fly to left ended the threat. Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) was two for three, with a run scored and a stolen base.
Webster has a full slate of games in a three day span, starting with a single game vs. Eureka College (IL) at GCS Ballpark on April 16. The Gorloks host Eureka for a double-header on Apri 17, then travel back to Washington University for a double-header on April 18.
