Dylan Dean Smith (FR, Edwards County HS, IL) shut down the Eureka College (IL) bats for eight innings, and the Webster offense banged out 14 hits, as the Gorloks won, 7-1, on April 16 at GCS Ballpark. In just his fourth start, Smith won his fourth game, and the "Go-Go Gorloks," as PA announcer John Hoffmann refers to them, stole 11 more bases.
Smith is 4-0 on the season, after allowing one unearned run on nine hits and one walk, while striking out nine. Smith lowered his season ERA to 1.68 and has struck out 25 in 28 innings on the season. Jason Gray (JR, North Central CC, MO) came on ito pitch a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.
Webster had three doubles among its 14 hits, but extended many of those singles to doubles and triples with the running game. It was the fifth game this season Webster has hit double figures in stolen bases, and the team has 119 steals in 23 games.
Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) swiped three of those bases, going three for four at the plate, with three runs scored. Stevenson has 17 hits in his last 23 at-bats, raising his average from .170 to .317 in that span. Anthony Genna (SR, Lyons Township HS, IL) was three for five, with two RBIs and two steals.
Webster is 10-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 17-6 overall. The Gorloks host the Red Devils again, for a double-header, on April 17. The team will travel to Washington University for a double-header on April 18.
