Whatever it takes to slow down the Webster University baseball team offensively, the Washington University Bears have been the only ones to figure it out in recent weeks, beating the Gorloks 4-2 and 5-4 at the Hilltop on April 18. The Webster offense, which averages just under eight runs per game on the season, scored 10 runs in three contests against the Bears this past week.
The Gorloks entered the sixth inning in game one, down 4-1, but scored one run and had the bases loaded with one out. A 5-4-3 double play ended the threat for Webster, only the fourth double play the Gorloks have hit into in 27 games this season. David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) started and took his first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.
Webster opened a 4-2 lead in game two as Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS) put the Gorloks on the board as he doubled in a run in the third. Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) had a two-run single in the fifth to put Webster up 3-1. The RBIs were Stevenson's 13th and 14th in his last seven games. The Bears would not go away, and a three-run sixth, aided by two walks and a hit batsman, gave them a 5-4 lead.
The Gorloks put a runner on with one out in the seventh, but couldn't push another run across. Steve Dooley (SO, Florissant Valley CC) took his first loss, dropping to 3-1 on the season. Matt Moore (JR, St. Joseph's College, IN) had a big day at the plate, going three for six, with two runs scored.
Webster is 19-8 on the season. The Gorloks host St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Westminster College for a single game on April 20 at GCS Ballpark, then travel to the University of Missouri-St. Louis on April 25 for another single contest.
