The Webster University men’s baseball team improved to 14-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as it defeated MacMurray College (IL), 11-1, in April 26 at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks employed a ‘pitcher by committee’ strategy in the contest, using a different pitcher each inning.
After David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) pitched a scoreless first, the Gorloks picked up four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-0 lead. As he was scheduled to only pitch one inning, Mueller was the recipient of the win, improving his record to 5-1 on the year. The seven different Gorlok pitchers allowed five hits, one run, and struck out what is believed to be a school-record 15 batters in a game.
Craig Schaefer (SR, Cartersville HS, IL) had a two-run shot in the first, and added a run-scoring double in the fifth. Anthony Genna (SR, Lyons Township HS, IL) hit a two-run bomb to lead a four-run sixth. Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) broke the Webster single season record for steals, swiping his 31st and 32nd of the season.
Webster has a double-header at Illinois Wesleyan University on April 28. The Titans are ranked 26th nationally in the NCAA III, then travel to Louisville, KY, for a showdown with first-place Spalding University, on April 30-May 1, for three games.
