Gorlok Bats Batter Beavers in Sweep

Offense Comes Alive For 30 Runs

The Webster University men's baseball team's bats, slumbering somewhat the past two weeks, came alive in a weekend sweep of the Blackburn College (IL) Beavers.  The Gorloks swept a twinbill from Blackburn, 6-4 and 15-0, on April 3, after beating the Beavers at Carlinville, 9-3, on April 2.

Webster scored 30 runs in the series and had 25 hits in the double-header.  Anthony Genna (SR, Lyons Township HS, IL) went 4-4, with four runs and a double, and Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS) was 3-5 with three RBIs with a double to highlight the offensive onslaught in the nightcap.  Webster added nine more stolen bases on the day to bring its season total to 73.

Mike Gebhardt (JR, St. Dominic's HS) picked up his first win of the season, in relief in the opener.  David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) came on in relief in the third inning and pitched the Gorloks out of a jam after Blackburn had taken a 2-1 lead.  Gebhardt took over in the fifth and was bailed out of a jam of his own in the sixth by Jason Gray (JR, North Central CC, MO), who earned the save.

Dylan Dean Smith (FR, Edwards County HS, IL) started the second game and improved to 2-0 on the year.  Smith pitched five innings of one-hit ball, and Jeremy Ryan (FR, Gordon Tech HS, IL) and Quincy Berg (FR, Wilmot S, WI) finished up the shutout in relief.

The Gorloks are 4-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and are 11-4 overall.  Webster travels to Greenville College (IL) for a single game on April 5, and returns home to GCS Ballpark on April 8 to play Principia College (IL) in a single game as well.
