The Gorlok bats continued to sizzle as the Webster University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Principia College, winning 23-0 and 9-0, at Elsah, IL, on April 9. Webster has scored 83 runs in its last five games. Relying more on the long ball than the running game they have utilized all season, the Gorloks hit seven home runs in the double-header.
Outfielder Joe Gerace (FR, Oak Park-River Forest HS, IL) was the hitting star in the Gorloks 23-0 game one win. Gerace, hitting .258 with no home runs and three RBIs coming into the contest, broke out in a big way as he homered twice. Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS) had a three-run shot, and Craig Schaefer (SR, Carterville HS, IL) a two-run blast.
The Gorloks hit three more home runs in the nightcap. Dustin List (JR, Illinois Central HS) drove a three-run homer, his first of the year. Anthony Genna (SR, Lyons Township HS, IL) hit his third home run of the season, and upped his team-leading RBI total to 28. Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) hit his first homer of the season also, a solo shot.
Dylan Dean Smith (FR, Edwards County HS, IL) started and pitched five scorless innings to pick up his third win in game one. Smith has started four games and is 3-0 on the season. Brandon Shaw (FR, North Fulton HS, IL) started game two and also pitched five shutout innings for his first win of the year. Shaw is 1-1 after making his fith start.
Webster extended its winning streak in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to seven, and are 8-1 in the league. The Gorloks are 15-4 overall, and travel to Fulton, MO, on April 12 for a double-header with Westminster Colllege. Webster has a single game that was added to the schedule at Washington University on April 15.
