Gorloks Take Rubber Game at Spalding

The Webster University baseball team took on Spalding University, who were13-0 in the SLIAC, in a weekend series in Louisville, KY.  The Gorloks handed the Golden Eagles their first defeat in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference, 4-1, in the second game of a double-header on April 30 after losing the opener, 3-2.  Webster came back the next day to take the rubber game, 6-2.

Spalding, who came into the series averaging eight runs per game, was held to four earned runs total for the three game set by the Gorlok pitching staff.  Webster leads the SLIAC with a 3.32 staff earned run average.

In the series closer, Jason Gray (JR, North Central CC, MO) picked up the win in relief, improving to 3-0 on the year.  Gray made his team-high 12th appearance and leads the Gorlok staff with a 1.08 earned run average.  Steve Dooley (SO, Florissant Valley CC) made the start and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, and striking out eight.

Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS) had a personal season-high for RBIs in a game, driving in four of the Webster runs on the afternoon.  Shelton was three for four, raising his season batting average to .357.  Joe Gerace (FR, Oak Park-River Forest HS, IL) was two for four, with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Gerace went four for seven in the two victories on the weekend.

Zach Schneider (FR, Warren Township HS, IL) continued his fine first season of collegiate ball, pitching a complete game four-hitter, allowing one run, and striking out eight.  Schneider is 4-4 on the year, and has 61 strikeouts in 54 innings to go with a sparkling 2.15 ERA.  Webster had seven hits in the contest and Joe Gerace (FR, Oak Park-River Forest HS, IL) banged out two of them, driving in a run.

David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) started the opener and pitched well enough to win.  He allowed three hits and a walk in six innings, but two of three runs he gave up were unearned as the Gorlok infield had errors in two Golden Eagle rallies.  Anthony Genna (SR, Lyons Township HS, IL) had two hits, one a double, and drove in one run.  Paul Kienker (SR, St. John Vianney HS) was two for three with a run scored.

Webster is 16-3 in the SLIAC and 23-11 overall.  The Gorloks stay in Louisville for a May 1 single game vs. Spalding and have a double-header at MacMurray College (IL) on May 5.
