The Webster University women’s softball team won, 3-2, in game one at Westminster College, but dropped the nightcap, 4-3, to the Blue Jays, on April 30.  The Gorloks have clinched the #2 seed in the SLIAC Tournament, and will need a lot of luck if they are to grab the #1 seed.

The Gorloks mustered three runs on just four hits in the opener. Chelsea Schaffer (JR, Lindbergh HS), who had doubled, scored on a squeeze by Hanna Brindisi (JR, John A. Logan CC, IL) in the fourth, and Kristie Konersman (FR, Northwest HS) scored on a Westminster error in the sixth.  Konersman doubled home what turned out to be the game winner with two outs in the seventh.

Ashley Meagher (SO, Dupo HS, IL) pitched her eighth complete game in her last 11 starts, improving to 11-4 on the season, while winning her fifth straight start.  Only one of the two runs she allowed was earned, while allowing seven hits and striking out five.

In game two, the Webster bats came alive, banging out 11 hits, but none for extra bases, as it built a 3-0 lead after three innings.  The Blue Jays pecked away, picking up runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to take a 4-3 lead.  The Gorloks loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't get the tying run home.  Webster left seven runners on in the finalf four innings.  Trisha Thompson (FR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) pitched all seven innings and took the loss, falling to 7-4 on the season.

Webster finishes 13-3 in the SLIAC and 23-13 overall.  Fontbonne University leads at 13-1, and would need to lose its last two SLIAC game, vs. Blackburn College (IL) for Webster to claim the #1 seed. The SLIAC Tournament will begin on May 5 at Forestwoods Park in Ferguson. Times and opponents have yet to be determined.
