The Webster University men’s baseball team is headed to the St. Louis intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship round after beating Fontbonne University, 4-3 in 12 innings, on May 13, at Glik Park in Highland, IL. Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) walked to lead off the 12th, stole his 43rd base, and scored on a single to right by Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS).
Steven Dooley (SO, Florissant Valley CC) was the winner, pitching the final three innings, giving up no runs, and striking out four. Dooley is 5-1 on the season. David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) started and gave Webster all they could hope for, going nine innings, scattering 11 hits, allowing three runs, and striking out eight.
Webster grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on a bases-loaded single by Joe Gerace (FR, Oak Park-River Forest HS, IL) and an RBI fielder’s choice by Stevenson. Fontbonne tied the game with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, and the teams exchanged runs to set up the extra-inning finale.
The Gorloks will be making their sixth trip in the last seven years the tournament final has been held, to the championship round. Webster has won the tournament the last four times it has reached the championship.
Webster will face Greenville, at 3:00 p.m. on May 14, at Glik Park. A win would give the Gorloks the championship outright in the double elimination format, and a loss would force them to play a second game immediately following.
