Playing in a driving rain, on a field that was already 'dicey', the Webster University men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 tie, with Elmhurst College (IL), on September 18 at the Soccer Park. The field was playable in the first half, with 10 saves being made by both teams combined. But conditions deteriorated in the second half and two overtimes, as slipping and sliding became the rule.
Starting goalkeeper Alex Cupp (SR, Lutheran South HS) and Brian Woodward (FR, Eureka HS) who took over in the second half, shared the shutout. Woodward held off the Blue Boys in the two overtime periods as well.
Elmhurst outshot Webster 14-12, but both teams had to come up with eight saves to post the shutouts. While head coach Marty Todt utilized his bench, using 21 players to keep fresh legs while battling the unsteady field, Elmhurst only rotated two subs into the contest.
The tie leaves Webster at 3-4-1 on the season. The Gorloke have a week off before travelling across the river to Belleville, IL, to take on Lindenwood University-Belleville on September 25. Webster returns home on October 2 to play Eureka College (IL).
