Double the Pleasure: Men's Soccer SLIAC Champs

Webster 2 Westminster College 0

The Webster University men's soccer team captured its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship since 2009, defeating Westminster Colllege, 2-0, on November 3 at the Soccer Park.  Once again, the Gorloks defense stepped up front and center, shutting down the Blue Jays, despite 21 Westminster shots.

Pat McCaffrey (SO, Bishop DuBourg HS, MO) scored both Webster goals, with both assists going to senior Shea Vogt (Marquette HS, MO).  After tight play by both teams, but a 15-7 shot advantage by the Gorloks in the first, the game was tied 0-0 at the half.  Just four minutes into the second half, Vogt took a cross shot at the goal that deflected off the goalies hands and McCaffrey, sitting on the doorstep, punched it in for a 1-0 Webster lead.

The intensity picked up in the game after the goal as did the Westminster offense.  But it was McCaffrey again, off a pass from Vogt, who put the Gorloks up 2-0 at the 68:47 mark.  The goals were McCaffrey's fifth and sixth of the season.

The Blue Jays felt the pressure of the two goal deficit and took shot after shot to no avail, as Webster goalkeeper Brian Woodward (SO, Eureka HS, MO) wound up with six saves and his eighth shutout of the season.  Woodward lowered his season goals against average to 1.16 with the blanking.

Webster wound up allowing only four goals in 10 SLIAC contests in 2012, shutting out its opponents in seven of the games.  In its last 11 games overall, the Gorloks are 9-1-1.

Webster won its fourth SLIAC Tournament, to go along with five SLIAC League titles.  With the win, the Gorloks are 12-5-2 on the season.  They now await word from the NCAA about who and when they will be playing in the NCAA Championship.  Announcements for bracket seedings will be announced on Monday, November 5.

McCaffrey was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the 2012 SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament.  For their efforts, Kyle Leonard (SR, Lafayette HS, MO), Agustin Villalba (SR, American School, Ecuador), and Jeff Wallner (SO, Eureka HS, MO) were named to the 2012 All-Tournament Team.

In addition to the SLIAC Championship, the Gorloks received numerous honors.  Senior defender Josh Sellmeyer (Mehlville HS, MO) was named the 2012 SLIAC Men's Soccer Player of the Year.  Head Coach Marty Todt took home his sixth SLIAC Coach of the Year award and the team had six First-Team All-Conference selections.  Webster award winners were:
