Baseball Gorloks Lose at Washington U, 12-7

The Gorlok bats banged out 13 hits and scored seven runs…but it wasn’t enough as the Webster University baseball team fell to Washington University, 12-7, at the Hilltop on March 21.  The Webster defense helped contribute to the Bear scoring output, and starter Isaac Behme (FR, Harrisburg HS, IL) had his first rough outing of the season in the loss.

Webster grabbed a quick lead in the top of the first as a hit batsman, two walks, and a Bear error led to three Gorlok runs.  Alex Kazmierski (JR, Triton CC, IL) and Mitchell Bonds (JR, Kankakee CC, IL) both had RBI singles.  Bonds would later have to leave the contest after a bad hop on a ground ball struck him in the face.

Washington U came back in its half of the first inning and scored five to take the lead.  The Gorloks clawed away and picked up a run in the second, on a solo home run by Cody Stevenson (JR, Centralia HS, IL), and two more in the third, to take the lead again, 6-5.  But it was short-lived as the Bears scored two more in the third to go back up, 7-6.

Although the Gorloks managed to tie it one more time with a run in the fourth, it would be the last run of the afternoon for Webster.  Washington U scored three more in the fifth, and two in the eighth to pad their final lead at 12-7.

Webster had numerous more chances to score as it stranded 14 runners in the game.  Bonds was two for two, before being injured.  Taylor Stoulp ( was two for four, with two runs scored, and two walks on the afternoon.  Kazmierski was two for four also, with a double, and RBI, and a walk.

Webster is 7-7 on the season.  The Gorloks open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on March 23 with a single game at Principia College (IL), beginning their quest to win a sixth straight SLIAC league title.  Webster returns home to GCS Ballpark on March 24 for a doubleheader with Principia to complete the weekend series.
