After an exceptionally long day of baseball that started at 2:00 pm. and ended at 11:45 p.m., the Webster University baseball team jumped on a bus the following morning, March 25, and took a three hour ride to Normal, IL, to face NCAA I Illinois State University. The Gorloks hung with the Redbirds, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, but three Webster errors helped fuel two three-run rallies by ISU as they defeated Webster, 6-2, at Duffy Bass Field.
Webster took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Tom Henke (SR, Lindbergh HS) doubled with one out, and Alex Kazmierski (JR, Triton CC, IL) drove him home with a double. Down 3-1 in the fifth after an ISU three-run fourth, the Gorloks loaded the bases with one out, but only could squeeze one run in as Redbird reliever Brad Sorkin shut Webster down the final four innings. An ISU three-run sixth completed the scoring on the day.
Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC) started for Webster and allowed five hits, five walks and six run, only three earned, in six innings of work. Dooley struck out three as his record fell to 0-3 on the season. David Mueller (SR, Westminster Christian Academy) pitched the final two innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit.
The Gorlok 2-3-4 hitters carried the load on offense as Taylor Stoulp (SO, Southwestern Illinois CC) went three for five, Henke went two for five, with an RBI and run scored, and Kazmierski was two for four, with the double and RBI. Shortstop Mitchell Bonds )JR, Kankakee CC, IL) and third baseman Michael Aaron (SO, Edwards County HS, IL) made their returns to the lineup after both suffered facial injuries on bad hops vs. Washington University earlier in the week.
Webster is 10-8 overall on the season, and Illinois State improved to 15-6. The Gorloks host Westminster College on March 28 at GCS for a pair, as St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action resumes.
