The Webster University softball team opened 2012 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a split at home against Westminster College on March 29, winning the first 1-0, and dropping the nightcap, 5-3. Trisha Thompson (SO, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) threw the first seven inning no-hitter for the Gorloks since 2007, in the opener.
Thompson allowed just two walks and struck out six in picking up her first shutout of the season, and the sixth of her career. Taylor Gibbs (FR, Alton HS, IL), getting the start at first base, singled in the Gorloks only run in the fifth. Jessica Arcangel (JR, St. Lucy's Priory, CA) started off the inning with a single and Diana Haynes (SO, Civic Memorial HS, IL), pinch-running, stole second base and scored on Gibbs hit.
The last Webster seven-inning no-hitter took place on March 6, 2007, at Illinois College. Gail Vogt, pitching the first five innings, and Lexi Moore, throwing the last two, shared the feat in a 7-1 win.
Ashley Meagher (JR, Dupo HS, IL) started game two and deserved a better fate than taking the loss in the contest. Meagher allowed eight hits and five walks in seven innings, but all five runs against her were unearned and came with two out in the third as a Gorlok error opened the floodgates. Webster rallied for three runs in the fourth, with key doubles by Gibbs and Aly Watson (JR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS). But the Gorloks could muster no more offense after the fourth as the last nine Webster batters were retired in order,
Webster is 1-1 in the SLIAC and 5-15 overall. The team heads to Eureka College (IL) for two on March 31 and to Blackburn College (IL) on April 4 for two more before returning home on April 6 to face Greenville College (IL).
