The Gorlok bats, slumbering for most of the season, awoke in a big way as the Webster University softball team beat Eureka College, 5-1 & 11-2, on March 31 at Eureka, IL. The Webster offense banged out 25 hits in the sweep and Eureka kept in check by two good starting performances by Ashley Meagher (JR, Dupo HS, IL) and Trisha Thompson (SO, Xavier Prep HS, AZ).
Webster had nine hits in the opener as Danielle LaVenture (SO, Nerinx Hall HS) had four RBIs, including a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning. Julie Hartung (SR, Macon HS, MO), Kristie Konersmann (SO, Northwest HS), and Taylor Gibbs (FR, Alton HS, IL) all had three hits in the contest. Meagher, who had showed signs of breaking out of a slump in her previous start against Westminster, allowed only three hits and one run, while striking out five.
In game two, the Gorloks raked Eureka pitching for 16 hits. LaVenture had three more RBIs and had three hits for the game. Gibbs muscled up, going three for four with a home-run and two doubles. Ally Watson (JR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS) was two for four with two RBIs, and Hartung was two for four.
Thompson won her fith game of the season, allowing one earned run on five hits. She walked none, and struck out six in six innings, as the game was shortened by the eight-run rule.
Webster travels to Carlinville, IL, on April 4 to take on Blackburn College in a doubleheader, then return home on April 6 for a doubleheader vs. Greenville College (IL) at Blackburn Park.
