Rallying to tie in the 7th and winning in the 8th inning in game one, then jumping to a 5-1 lead and cruising in the final, the Webster University softball team swept a doubleheader with Illinois College, 5-4 and 11-8, on April 10, at Blackburn Park. The Gorloks banged out 26 hits in the two games.
Webster had runners reach in all eight innings of the opener and 11 reach base in the first four innings, but were down 4-3 heading into the fifth. Ashley Meagher (JR, Dupo HS, IL) started for the Gorloks and allowed only two runners the final four innings. A Webster run in the seventh sent the teams went to extra innings.
In the eighth, per extra inning rules, a Blue Girl runner was placed at second and after a sacrifice and a pop out, was on third base. Catcher Kaytlin Burczak (JR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL) chased down a Meagher wild pitch and nailed the runner trying to score from third on a perfect toss to Meagher covering home.
Webster had an easier time in its half of the eighth. Sam Powers (SO, John F. Kennedy HS) was the runner placed at second and Julie Hartung (SR, Macon HS, MO) followed with a walk. After a sacrifice by Kristie Konersmann (SO, Northwest HS) moved them over, Danielle LaVenture (SO, Nerinx Hall HS) singled in Powers with the winning run.
Meagher was the winner, her third in her last four starts. In eight innings, she allowed seven hits and three earned runs, walked none, and struck out five.
The second game wasn't as suspenseful as Webster scored three in the second and two in the third to go up, 5-1. The Gorloks had padded their lead to 11-4 with a six-run sixth, but made things a little uncomfortable as they gave up four runs in the seventh to make it an 11-8 final.
Tabatha Bahre (SR, Lutheran South HS) was three for four in game two, with two runs scored and two RBIs. She was five for eight on the night and had three bunt singles. Kristin Rolla (SO, O'Fallon HS, IL) was two for four with four RBIs in game two. LaVenture was four for nine for the night, and and Hanna Brindisi (SR, John A. Logan CC, iL) was three for seven, with her RBI double in the seventh inning sending game one into extra innings. Trisha Thompson (SO, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) won her fifth straight start for the Gorloks.
Webster will be back at Blackburn Park to face Spalding University on April 13 for two, and hosts Washington University on April 15 at Blackburn for another twinbill.
