Baseball Bats Beat Bears, 12-9

Completing its non-conference regular season schedule, the Webster University baseball team defeated Washington University, 12-9, at GCS Ballpark, on April 17.  Washington University came into the game at 19th in the previous NCAA III national rankings.  Alex Kazmierski (JR, Triton CC, IL) and Mitchell Bonds (JR, Kankakee CC, iL) led the Gorlok offense.

Webster built a 10-3 lead in the first three innings, with a combination of skill and gifts as the Gorloks banged out six hits but received seven walks and two reached base on errors.  Sloppy play by Webster let Washington U. inch back into the contest.  The Bears scored unearned runs in three different innings, including three in a four-run eighth, to pull within three of the Gorloks, 12-9.  Isaac Behme, (FR, Harrisburg HS,IL), set the Bears down 1-2-3 in the 9th after coming on in relief in the eighth. having to pitch around a key fielding mishap.

Kazmierski reached base five times, going two for two with two runs scored, an RBI, a stolen base, and three walks.  Bonds was two for five, including a blast off the left field wall that wound up being a double.  He also had two RBIS, two stolen bases, and one run.  The Gorloks had six stolen bases on the night, including a steal of home  by Taylor Stoulp (SO, St. Mary's HS) on the front end of a double stea,l with Kazmierski swiping second.

Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC) started for the Gorloks and picked up his second win of the season.   He went seven innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs, walking four, and strking out two.

The Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, to play MacMurray College in a single contest.  The team will host Spalding University (KY) for a three-game set on April 21-22 at GCS.
