Softball Gorloks Split With Griffins

The Webster University softball team settled for a split, defeating Fontbonne University in the opener, 6-4, and losing the nightcap, 5-1, on April 18 at ABC Park in St. Ann.  Ashley Meagher (JR, Dupo HS, IL) took the mound for Webster in the opening game victory and won her sixth game of the season.

Meagher pitched a complete game, scattering ten hits and striking out seven, and picking up the win.  Webster built a 6-1 lead in the first three innings, but  a couple defensive miscues helped the Griffins crawl back into the game.  Meagher stiffened up and squelched several Fontbonne rallies with strikeouts to preserve her third win in her last four starts.

Kaytlin Burczak (JR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL), Tabatha Bahre (SR, Lutheran South HS), and Danielle LaVenture (SO, Nerinx Hall HS) all had two hits, with Burczak driving in three of the Gorloks' runs.

The Gorlok offense rested in game two, as the Griffins pulled to a 3-0 lead in the third inning.  Webster scored a run in the sixth inning to avert the shutout, but could muster no more.  Julie Hartung (SR, Macon HS, MO) had two hits and drove in the lone run for the Gorloks.  Trisha Thompson (SO, Xavier Prep HS, Az) took the loss for Webster.

The loss dropped Webster to 8-4 in the SLIAC and 14-20 overall.  The loss in the opener was Fontbonne's first in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season.  Webster is home at Blackburn Park on April 21 for a doubleheader vs. MacMurray College.  It is senior Day, and the Gorloks three seniors, playing their final home games, will be honored before the first contest.
