Stretched to its limit by six games in four days, the Webster University baseball team needed strong starting efforts in a double header at Eureka College, and got them as the Gorloks won 10-0 and 8-4, on April 24. Mike Gebhardt (SR, St. Dominic HS) had a shutout in the opener and Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC), had a complete game win in game two.
After using four starters the previous three days, the Gorloks looked to the bullpen to give them a solid effort and Gebhardt, starting his first game in three years, answered the bell. He allowed only four hits and three walks, striking out seven, in the seven-inning complete game. The win was Gebhardt's first of the season.
Dooley, coming off two relief appearances for saves just two days earlier, pitched a nine-inning complete game, giving up four hits and three walks also, and striking out 12 Red Devils. He evened his record at 3-3 on the year.
Cody Stevenson (JR, Centralia HS, IL) was the offensive star in game one, going four for four with a home run, double, three runs scored, two RBIs, and three stolen bases. Mitchell Bonds (JR, Kankakee CC, IL) had a solo home run in the game also as the Gorloks hammered out 16 hits, six of them the extra-base variety, in only seven.
In game two, Tom Henke (SR, Lindbergh HS) keyed a six-run second inning with a two-run homer, his fifth on the season. Stevenson had two more hits, including a double, and a stolen base, and Kevin Kojs (SO, Lincoln Way Central HS, IL) had two hits, including a double and stolen base as well.
Webster improves to 16-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and 24-10 overall. The Gorloks will be home at GCS Ballpark on April 28 vs. Fontbonne University.
