Clinching its sixth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in a row, the Webster University baseball team won three games over Fontbonne University, on April 29, at Shaw Park in Clayton, MO. Webster started the afternoon winning a game, 1-0, in 10 innings, that was postponed at GCS Ballpark on April 28. The Gorloks then won the regularly scheduled double header, 5-2 and 2-1, for a series sweep of the Griffins.
Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC) came on in relief of David Mueller (SR, Westminster Christian Academy), who had pitched five innings of no-hit ball at GCS on April 28. After being suspended, the game was moved to Shaw Park the next day to piggyback on the scheduled double header between the two teams. Dooley stymied the Griffins until Webster scored a run in the bottom of the tenth to win, 1-0. The win was Dooley's fourth of the season.
The Gorloks had battled the elements all evening on the 28th, with a storm system terrorizing the St. Louis area, and even fans and team personnel being wisked into safe places at GCS as tornado sightings were heeded. But after five hours, and no sign of lightning letting up, the game was called.
Dooley came back out and started the first game of the scheduled double header. Cody Hafeli (JR, Kankakee CC, IL) relieved Dooley and picked up his sixth win of the year as the Gorloks pulled away late to win, 5-2. Coach Bill Kurich trotted Hafeli back out also, to start the second game of the double header. Webster took an early lead and Isaac Behme (FR, Harrisburg HS, IL), in relief of Hafeli, made it hold up in a 2-1 victory. Hafeli got the decision and is 7-1 on the season.
Clinching the title again, Webster gains the number one seed and will act as host of the SLIAC Tournament, to be held at Glik Park in Highland, IL, on May 10-12. Since 2005, the Gorloks have won the tournament five of six years, with the tournament being rained out in 2008. Webster is 19-2 in the SLIAC, with a four-game lead over second-place Spalding University, and only two SLIAC contests remaining. The Gorloks are 27-10 overall.
Webster plays its final home game of the season, on May 4, at GCS Ballpark, vs. Greenville College (IL). It will be 'Senior Night' and those players making their final appearance of their career at home will be honored before the contest.
