Baseball Goes 2-0 in NCAA Regional with 10-2 Win over DePauw

The Webster University baseball team continued on in the winners’ bracket in the NCAA III Regional at USA Stadium in Millington, TN, with a 10-2 win over DePauw University (IN) on May 17.  The Gorloks will face off against the number one seed in the region, Birmingham-Southern University, on May 18, at 12:00 p.m.

Freshman lefthanded pitcher Isaac Behme (Harrisburg HS, IL) pitched out of jams in several innings, including one in the seventh with help from Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC, MO), to earn the win.  Behme scattered six hits and four walks, giving up just two runs while striking out three, winning his sixth game.  Dooley picked up his seventh save of the season, and second in two NCAA games, pitching a scoreless two and a third innings to close out the game.

Webster had nine hits but made them count for 10 runs.  The Gorloks manufactured single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings, two in the seventh, and sealed the win with five in the eighth.  Taylor Stoulp (SO, St. Mary’s HS, MO) and Tom Henke (SR, Lindbergh HS, MO) were both three for four with three RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base. Stoulp scored three runs while Henke scored once and doubled also.

The Gorloks are 33-12; the second all-time high wins for a single season, surpassing the 32 won in 2011.  The 2010 team holds the record with 35 wins.

Birmingham-Southern, a former Division I program that dropped down to NCAA III in 2007-2008, is 37-7 on the year after defeating Illinois Wesleyan University, 7-4, and Emory University (GA), 6-1, in the first two rounds.
