The Webster University softball team advanced to the St.Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semi-finals, only to be driven into the elimination bracket with a 6-1 loss to Fontbonne University, at ABC Ball Park, on May 3. The Gorloks defeated Blackburn College (IL), 7-2, in the first round, and will need to defeat the Beavers again to get another shot at the crown.
Trisha Thompson (SO, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) started the first round game and added her 11th win on the season, scattering eight Blackburn hits, allowing two runs, and striking out six. The Beavers gave the Gorloks a lot of help in the contest, committing four errors in the fourth and fifth innings, contributing to three unearned Webster runs.
Kristie Konersmann (SO, Northwest HS) led the Gorlok offense with three hits in four at-bats, falling a home run short of a 'cycle' in the game. Konersmann tripled in a run in the third, doubled in another in the sixth, and had a single in the first. Tabatha Bahre (SR, Lutheran South HS) was two for three, with an RBI and a run scored. Danielle LaVenture (SO, Nerinx Hall HS) was two for four with an RBI.
In the game against Fontbonne, the Gorlok bats slumbered as they mustered only two hits. Though credited with only two errors by the official scorer, the Webster defense had a heavy hand in a five-run Fontbonne third inning that gave starter Ashley Meagher (SO, Dupo HS, IL) an early exit from the game. Thompson pitched the final three and a third innings, allowing just one hit, but Webster could only manage one unearned run against the Griffins.
The Gorloks will face Blackburn at 5:00 p.m. on May 4, at ABC Ball Park. A win would pit them against Fontbonne at 7:00 p.m. Wins against Blackburn and Fontbonne would land the Gorloks in a championship game at 6:00 p.m. on May 6 at ABC. In the double elimination format, Webster would have to defeat Fontbonne a second time to win the title.
