Webster Suffers First Conference Loss

Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team lost 3-0 to Fontbonne University Saturday (Oct. 19) in a contest featuring two of the top teams in the conference. Webster and Fontbonne were picked to finish 1-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season in a poll of SLIAC coaches.
 
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Gorloks. This is Webster's first loss to an NCAA Division III opponent this season.
 
The Gorloks' six straight wins matched the program's longest winning streak in the past 13 years. Both the 2006 and 2009 Webster squads also won six games in a row.
 
Webster outscored its opponents 14-1 during the recent streak and didn't allow a goal in 557 minutes of game action.
 
Fontbonne scored two goals in the opening 21 minutes, including a tally 49 seconds into the contest. The Griffins added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute.
 
Junior Brian Woodward (Eureka, MO / Eureka) made four saves for the Gorloks. Both teams attempted 12 shots.
 
The Gorloks dropped to 9-3-3 overall and 4-1 in the SLIAC with the loss. Webster is the defending SLIAC regular-season and tournament champion.
 
Webster continues conference play with a game at Spalding (Ky.) Wednesday (Oct. 23). The Gorloks then travel to MacMurray (Ill.) next Saturday (Oct. 26).
