Gorloks Collect Fourth Consecutive Shutout

Box Score Josh Papes and Jeff Wallner assisted on each other's goals to pace Webster University men's soccer team in its 3-0 conference win against Greenville College (Ill.) Saturday (Oct. 5) at St. Louis Soccer Park.

Wallner (Eureka, MO / Eureka), a junior midfielder, played a nifty through ball to fellow junior midfielder Papes (St. Louis, MO / McCluer North), who roofed a shot over the goalkeeper to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Papes returned the favor for Wallner about halfway into the second half. Papes' long throw-in reached Wallner in the box, and Wallner's shot skidded off the soaked turf and into the side netting.

Senior forward Patrick McCaffrey (St. Louis, MO / Bishop DuBourg) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. The goal, assisted by junior midfielder Kris Brown (Wentzville, MO / St. Charles CC), gave McCaffrey a team-high 11 points.

Junior goalkeeper Brian Woodward (Eureka, MO / Eureka) made one save to help Webster collect its fourth straight shutout. The Gorloks outshot the visitors 13-3.

The Gorloks have outscored their opponents, 10-0, during the four-game shutout streak. Webster last blanked four consecutive opponents in October 2010.

With the conference victory, the Gorloks (7-2-3 overall, 2-0 SLIAC) are tied for first in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings. Webster, the defending SLIAC champion, was selected to win the conference according to the SLIAC coaches' pre-season poll.

The Gorloks continue SLIAC play with a road game at Blackburn Saturday (Oct. 12). Webster hosts conference foe Principia Tuesday (Oct. 15) at 5 p.m. at Soccer Park.
