Baseball Falls in Season Opener, 3-2, to Bears

Box Score The Webster University baseball team dropped its season opener, 3-2, to Washington University, on February 23, in Memphis, TN.  The Bears picked up an unearned run in the top of the 10th for the win in a game played at Rhodes College.

In the 10th inning, Washington University scored after one out on a two-base error, a walk, and a single.  The unearned run was the only run allowed in 4 1/3 innings of relief by Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO), who allowed four hits, struck out three, and walked six in his outing.  Starter Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL), making his debut for the Gorloks, went 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs, while striking out three.

Webster took a 1-0 lead in the third when a Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) sac fly plated another newcomer, outfielder Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL).  Turner had singled, stolen second, and moved to third on a Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC) single.  Those wound up being the only hits in the game for Webster.

The Bears nicked Buchanan for two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Gorloks struck right back in the bottom of the inning to tie it back up.  Alex Kazmierski (SR, Triton College) and Ian Foege (JR, Jefferson College) walked to open the inning and Turner sacrificed them over to second and third.  Bonds scored Kazmierski with a sac fly to make it 2-2.

Dooley, who entered game with two out in 6th, got himself in and out of trouble in the seventh inning.  A walk from Dooley and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Washington University with no one out.  An infield fly and a 4-6-3 double plaly got the Gorloks out of the jam.   The score remained 2-2 until the Bears pushed the go-ahead run in the 10th.  Dooley took the loss for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks continue play in Memphis with a doubleheader on February 24 vs. Rhodes College.  Webster has its home opener on March 1 vs. Buena Vista College (IA) at GCS Ballpark.
