Box Score 2 The Webster University men's baseball team used solid starting and relief pitching, and a little go-go Gorlok offense to take a twinbill from Rhodes College, 8-4 and 7-3. The wins, in Memphis, TN, on February 24, showcased the abundant talent Webster has returning from its 2012 squad as well as the new talent in the mix for 2013.
The Gorloks took the opener, 8-4, after falling behind, 2-0 early in the contest. Webster picked up single runs in the fourth and fifth, and took the lead with two more in the seventh. A four-run ninth was more than enough insurance for the Gorloks. Starter Isaac Behme (SO, Harrisburg HS, IL) went six innings, allowing just one earned run as he scattered six hits and six walks, while striking out two. Dylan Dean Smith (JR, Edwards County HS, IL), making his first appearance after missing the 2012 season due to injury, picked up a save with three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out one and walking none.
Joe Winckel (JR, North County HS, MO), a transfer catcher from Southwestern Illinois CC, had a great debut by going four for five, with four RBIs for the game. Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL), the opening day starter, moved to first base and went two for five, with a run scored and an RBI.
In the finale, Cody Hafeli (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) picked up where he left off in a 9-1 2012 campaign, pitching six strong innings and giving up just one earned run on seven hits and two walks, gaining his first win. Kevin Lashley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO), another transfer from Southwestern Illinois CC, pitched the final three innings, giving up four hits, one run, and striking out three, as he earned a save.
The Gorloks scored two runs in the third and fourth, taking a 4-1 lead. Webster tacked on single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth, as they took the 7-3 final. Webster swiped eight bases in the contest. Outfielder Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL) was one for three, with a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) scored three runs and stole two bases, without a single hit, as he walked three times. Buchanan was one for five with two RBIs.
Webster faces Buena Vista University (IA) on March 1 in its home opener at GCS Ballpark on March 1. The Gorloks will host four teams over the weekend in a nine-game, round robin event that goes through March 3.
