Box Score The Webster University baseball team toppled the #1 ranked team in the NCAA III, Wheaton College (MA), 10-1, on March 10 in the Gorloks' first game in the Russ Matt Central Invitational in Auburndale, FL. Webster, smarting from an 0-3 homestand last weekend, righted the ship in an impressive way. Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO) started and went the distance and the Gorloks bats came alive with 16 hits.
Dooley allowed only five hits and one unearned run, as he struck out five and walked none in posting his first win in 2013. Webster broke on top in the third as Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) singled with two out and Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL) followed with a single. Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) had his first of four hits to drive in Stoulp.
After adding single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to build a 4-1 lead, Webster broke it open with a five-run eighth. After Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) walkd to lead off, Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) singled and Stoulp walked to load the bases. A Buchanan single drove in Lasky and a double by Rainbolt sent Hall and Stoulp home. After a walk to Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO) Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) had a two-out single to plate Buchanan and Rainbolt, and the Gorloks had a 9-1lead.
Rainbolt wound up four for six with five RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. Bonds was two for four with two RBIs, and Stoulp two for five with three runs scored. Lasky was two for four, on base three times, with a run scored, stolen base, and an RBI. Buchanan finished three for five with two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
The last time Webster faced a #1 ranked team, Christopher Newport University in the NCAA regional in 2011, the Gorloks handed them an 11-1 loss.
Things don't get much easier as Webster continues play in the Russ Matt. The Gorloks, who are 20th in the latest polls, face the State University of New York at Cortland (SUNY-Cortland) on March 11. The Red Dragons are 7-1 and ranked #4 in the NCAA III. Webster also will face last year's national champions, Marietta College (OH), on March 15.
