St. Joseph, 10-9, at Kissimmee, FL, on March 10. Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) pitched her second shutout of the trip in the victory over Transylvania and the Gorloks rallied from an 8-1 deficit against Mt. St. Joseph for the win.
Game One
Thompson had an outstanding performance against Transylvania, allowing just three hits and walking none, while striking out 11. The 11 strikeouts were the most for Thompson in a seven inning contest. She holds the Webster single game record with her 15 strikeouts in an eight-inning game vs. California Lutheran in 2012. The shutout was Thompson's 10th, moving her into a tie for third place on Webster's all-time career list with Heather Kristof (1998-99).
Webster broke on top with a two-run second inning on a walk to Kaytlin Burczak (SR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL), a double by Taylor Gibbs (SO, Alton HS, IL), and a double by Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory, CA). Burczak scored on a wild pitch and Gibbs scored on Arcangel's gapper. Arcangel went three for three in the game, with three RBIS, and figured in all three Webster rallies.
The Gorloks manufactured two more runs in the third when Kelley Bridgmon (JR, Windsor HS, MO) reached on an error and stole second. Aly Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) singled her home and after a walk to Gibbs, a single by Arcangel brought Watson around also. Webster added its last run in fifth on a Burczak double with one out, and a two-out single by Arcangel.
Game Two
Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS, MO) won her third game in three days as she came on in relief in the third. With Webster down 8-1, Franck pitched 6 2/3 innings to hold off Mt. St. Joseph as the Gorloks batttled back. Webster cut the lead to 8-4, scoring an unearned run in the fifth, and turned four singles in the sixth into two more, heading into the bottom of the seventh down by four.
In the seventh, after Webster loaded the bases on two singles and an error with one down, Franck singled in pinch-runner Diana Haynes (JR, Civic Memorial HS, IL) to cut it to 8-5. Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL) bases loaded single scored two more and a throwing error allowed Webster to tie the game at 8-8. Aided by the 'automatic runner at second to start an extra inning' rule, both teams scored single runs in the eighth to make in 9-9.
Franck got out of a jam In the top of the ninth, courtesy of a 1-5-2-5 double play to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Bridgmon lifted a sac fly to score the Burczak with one out for the game winning run. Franck also contributed offensively, going three for five, with a run scored and an RBI.
On the mound, Franck gave up four runs, all unearned, on six hits, and two walks, while striking out two. She is 3-0 on the season, having won all three on the trip.
