Box Score The Webster University baseball team took down its second top-ten ranked opponent in five days, beating St. Joseph's College (ME), 5-0, in Winter Haven, FL, on March 14. Cody Hafeli (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) threw a shutout for his second win of the season.
The Monks came into the game ranked #9 nationally in the NCAA III. Webster had defeated #1 ranked Wheaton College (MA), 10-1, five days earlier, at the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational. The Gorloks evened their season record at 5-5 with the win.
Hafeli went nine innings, allowed eight hits, no runs and only one walk, while striking out six. In one swoop he lowered his season ERA from 5.06 to 2.75 as he improved to 2-1. Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL), who had a walk-off game winning single the day before, continued to break out of a hitting slump with a two for three day. Stevenson finished the afternoon with three runs, two stolen bases and a double.
Stevenson got the Gorloks going with a lead off double in the first and advanced to third on passed ball He scored on Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) single to right. Lasky stole second and took third on the throw from the Monks catcher. Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) scored Lasky with a ground out to third, making it 2-0
In the third, Stevenson singled with one out and took second on a passed ball. Lasky bunted for a single, sending Stevenson to third. After Lasky swiped second, Hall walked to load bases, but a pop up and a ground out ended the inning.
Webster broke it open in the fifth. Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) singled and was balked to second base. Stevenson reached on a dropped third strike, advancing to second on a bad throw by the catcher as Bonds scored. Stevenson stole third and came home on another throwing error by the Monks catcher, putting Webster up 4-0.
The Gorloks added one more in the seventh. Stevenson walked, stole second, and a Lasky infield single moved him to third. Stevenson scored on double play ground out by Hall. Lasky was two for four, with an RBI, stolen base, and a run scored.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Gorloks as they face defending NCAA III national champions, Marietta College (OH) on March 15 as the Russ Matt Invitational continues. It will be the fourth top-ten team Webster faces on the trip as the Pioneers are ranked #2 nationally in the NCAA III.
