Thompson K's 18 as Gorloks Sweep Grinnell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) smashed her own Webster University strikeout record for a single game by whiffing 18 Grinnell College batters in a 7-0 Gorlok win.  Webster swept a doubleheader, winning game two with the Pioneers also, 15-4, on March 16 at Blackburn Park.

Thompson struck out 15 batters in an eight-inning game in 2012.  Against Grinnell, she faced only 22 batters, allowing just two hits and walking none as she tossed her third shutout in a week.  The NCAA record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game is 21, accomplished twice in its history.  Thompson struck out the first nine batters she faced, and after a seeing-eye roller into right broke the streak, she K'ed the next five batters, giving her 14 in five innings.  After getting a ground out to start the sixth, she struck out two more each in the sixth and seventh.

Webster took a 2-0 lead in the first. Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS, MO) singled, stole second, and Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL) reached on a fielder's choice.  The Pioneer third baseman attempted to nab Franck coming off second on a grounder, but Franck dove back in to second as the return throw from second to third was bobbled.  After a ground out moved both runners up, Kaytlin Burczak (SR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL) singled in Franck, and Muntz came around to score on a throw to second to hold Burczak at first.

The Gorloks scored one more in the second, and had two run innings in the third and sixth.  Aly Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) was two for three with a double, walk, and run scored.  Burczak was two for three with an RBI, and Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) was two for four with a run scored.  Kelley Bridgmon (JR, Windsor HS, MO) also had two hits and an RBI.  Franck was two for three with two stolen bases.

In game two, the Pioneers grabbed a lead when a walk, an error, and a double plated two unearned runs off starter Franck.  The Gorloks got those back in a hurry with a four run first.  After a single by Franck, and Muntz reaching on an error, Arcangel drove both home with a single.  Erin McGinnis (FR, Rockwood Summit, MO) reached on a single and Kayla Mahoney (SR, Fox HS, MO) followed with a two-run double.  Two walks, two hits, and three Pioneer errors led to five more Gorloks runs in the second.  After a single run in the third, Webster tacked on five more in the fourth, highlighted by a Taylor Gibbs (SO, Alton HS, IL) three-run home to left center field.

Arcangle was four for four, with four RBIs, and two runs scored in the contest. Gibbs was two for three, with a home run and three RBIs, and McGinnis was two for four with a stolen base

Franck pitched three innings, allowed three hits, four walks, and one earned run while striking out three to pick up her fourth win of the season.  She is 4-0.  Samantha Powers (JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO) came in and pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit and one unearned run.

Webster is 8-5 on the season.  The Gorloks are scheduled for a doubleheader on March 17 vs Wartburg College (IA) at Blackburn Park.
