Box Score 2 The Webster University baseball team opened up its defense of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown by taking a twinbill at MacMurray College (IL), 10-0 and 7-2. The Gorloks played a 14-hit attack into 10 runs in the opener, and Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO) pitched six shutout innings for the win.
Game One
All nine Webster starters had at least one hit in the 10-0 win. The Gorloks took a 2-0 lead in the second as Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) and Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL) led off with back to back singles. An Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO) sac fly and a Kevin Kojs (JR, Lincoln Way Central HS, IL) double pushed Rainbolt and Buchanan across. Webster quickly made it 5-0 with three in the third.
Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) singled and Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) walked to start the inning. Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) singled in Lasky for one. After a Stoulp stolen base and a Rainbolt walk and stolen base, Buchanan scored Stoulp and Rainbolt with a single. Webster picked up two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, for a 10-0 final.
Dooley (2-2) allowed just three hits and struck out eight, while walking none in his six innings of work. Jason Gray (SR, North Centrall CC, MO) came on in relief and finished up a scoreless seventh.
Game Two
Cody Hafeli (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) improved to 3-1 on the season by pitching seven innings, allowing nine hits, two runs, and walking two while striking out seven. Ryan Martinez (SR, Illinois Valley CC) pitched a scorless eighth and Gray threw a scoreless ninth.
After the teams exchanged runs in the first inning, the Gorloks did all their remaining offensive damage in the second. Joe Winckel (JR, Southwestern Illinois CC) walked, Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL) was hit by a pitch, and Foege singled to load the bases full of Gorloks. An E5 put Kojs on, scoring Winckel. Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) singled in Turner and Foege. After a stolen base by Stevenson, Lasky walked to load them up again.
A sacrifice fly by Hall to right scored Kojs, as Stevenson took third. Another E5 scored Stevenson and a Stoulp single scored Lasky with the sixth run of the inning. That made it 7-1, Webster, and after a MacMurray solo run in the bottom half of the second, the teams went the final seven innings scoreless.
Stoulp went five for nine on the afternoon, with three RBIs. Foege was three for seven with two RBIS and two runs scored. Stevenson was two for six, with three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.
The Gorloks are 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the SLIAC. Webster will play a single game vs. MacMurray College (IL) on March 25 at GCS Ballpark. The team travels to Fulton, MO, to take on Westminster College for a doubleheader on March 27.
