Box Score 2 The Webster Universtiy baseball team took a doubleheader from Eureka College (IL), 5-4 and 18-8, at GCS Ballpark, on March 30. The wins put Webster at 6-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and pushed its winning streak to 10 straight. Once again the 'Go-Go Gorloks' ran wild on the bases, stealing 15 bags in the sweep.
In
game one, the Gorloks scored a run in the first and added three more in the second inning. Joe Winckel (JR, North County HS, MO) reached on an error to lead off, stole second, and Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL) singled him home. Turner stole second and third, and scored on a single by Kevin Kojs (JR, Lincoln Way Central HS, IL). After Kojs swiped second, he came home on a double by Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) to give Webster a 4-0 lead.
The Red Devils touched Webster starter Dylan Dean Smith for two runs in the third on a hit batsman and two singles. The Gorloks added another run in the fourth to make it 5-2 but Smith ran into trouble in the sixth. Eureka reached him for two singles, a walk, and another single to start the inning and make it a 5-4 game. Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL) relieved and set the Red Devils down in order to quell the uprising. Jason Gray (SR, North Central CC, MO) pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save of the season. Smith picked up the win and is 1-0
Webster wound up with 10 stolen bases in the contest, with Turner finishing with four and Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) with three. The Gorloks, who generated 15 runs on nine hits the previous day, and had only six hits in the opener, maximized their opportunities in the nightcap as well. Webster won
game two, 18-8, on just 11 hits, stealing five more bases in the process.
The Gorloks stole five bases in the first inning as they took a 3-0 lead. Stevenson reached on an error and stole second to start the inning. Stevenson scored as Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) also reached on an error. Lasky was caught stealing but Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) walked and stole second also. A Stoulp double plated Hall and Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) singled him home. Rainbolt stole second as well, took third on a wild pitch, but after a walk to Turner and another stolen base, a fly out ended the rally.
After the Red Devils scored two runs of their own in the third, the Gorloks took a commanding lead with five more runs in the second. Stevenson once again reached on an error and pinch runner Charlie Gandolfi (SO, Mundelein HS, IL) stole second. Lasky singled and Hall walked to load the bases. Stoulp singled in Gandolfi and Rainbolt cleared the bases with a double, and took third on a throw home. Rainbolt scored the fifth run of the inning on a sac fly by Buchanan.
Webster added single runs in the third and fifth, sandwiched around another five-run rally in the fourth inning. The outburst in the fifth was highlighted by doubles from Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL), Gandolfi, and Max Oppenheimer (SO, Glenbard East HS, IL). In the sixth, Colin Bates (SR, Indian Hills CC, CO) doubled in the Gorloks final three runs. Hafeli went five innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk, while striking out nine. Hafeli improves to 4-1 on the year with the win.
Webster is 13-5 overall. The Gorloks will travel to Fulton, MO, to take on Westminster College on April 2.
