Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Webster University baseball team dropped a double-header, losing to Buena Vista University (IA), 7-5, and North Park Universitry (IL), 8-1, on March 4, at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks fell short in a ninth inning comeback in the first game and were victims of a late rally in the day's finale.
Game 2
Against North Park, both teams battled throughout the first seven innnings. After Webster scored in the bottom of the first and the Vikings tied it in the second, the teams stayed deadlocked through seven. Starter Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO), who had thrown seven strong innings, allowed two singles to start the eighth and Coach Bill Kurich went to the pen, bringing in Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL). Buchanan allowed two singles and a hit batsman and was followed by Jason Gray (SR, North Central CC, MO), who hit a batter also and allowed a single. When the dust settled, Webster was down 6-1.
North Park added two more in the ninth, via the long ball, for its final margin of victory. The Vikings had an excellent chance to break the tie in the sixth, but a strike by center fielder Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) to catcher Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO) cut down a Viking runner attempting to score on a two-out single to center.
Game 1
In the loss to Buena Vista, a Gorlok rally fell short in the bottom of the ninth. With one out and Webster down, 7-4, Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) doubled and came home on a pinch single by Alex Kazmierski's (SR, Triton College, IL). After a walk to Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL), an infield hit by Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) loaded the bases. The next two Gorloks went down on strikes to end the potential comeback.
Errors played a large part as both teams first got on the board in the fourth. The Beavers led off with a single and quickly had two on and no out when Webster pitcher Isaac Behme's (SO, Harrisburg HS, IL) throw pulled first baseman Buchanan off the base on a sac bunt attempt. After a single scored one run, a passed ball allowed a second run to give Buena Vista a 2-0 lead. The Gorloks got some help themselves, tying the score in the bottom of the inning.
With two down, Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) and Buchanan drew walks, and Joe Winckel (JR, North County HS, MO) hit a slow roller over the mound the Beaver shorstop bobbled as Stoulp came around to score. Rainbolt followed with a double as Buchanan and Winckel scored, and the Gorloks led, 3-2. Webster added a run in the fifth, again with two outs, as Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) walked and stole second. He scored on a Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) single to make it 4-2.
The Beavers put a five-spot on the Gorloks in the seventh. After a single, triple, double, and another single by Buena Vista plated three, Dylan Dean Smith relieved Behme. After a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases, a single drove in two more and the Beavers led, 7-4. Behme took the loss, up going 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, struck out eight while walking none.
Webster is 2-4 on the season. The Gorloks begin their spring trip on March 10, taking part in the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational. Webster plays six games in seven days, three against pre-season top 10 teams, Wheaton College (MA), SUNY-Cortland State (NY), and the 2012 NCAA III champions, Marietta College (OH).
