Softball Evens Record With Sweep at Rebel Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team took a twin bill, defeating Thomas More College (KY), 7-0, and Beloit College (WI), 4-2.  Both contests took place at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, on March 8.  Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) picked up her first win, pitching a complete game shutout against Thomas More in the opener.

Thompson went seven innings, allowing just five hits and one walk, while striking out six.  In gaining her first win of 2013, she threw her ninth career shutout, tying her for fourth on Webster's all-time high list.  Webster took an early 2-0 lead in the contest vs. the Saints, but a four-run seventh broke it open for the Gorloks.  That inning was highlighted by a pinch hit, two-run double by Kaytlin Burczak (SR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL).

Taylor Gibbs (SO, Alton HS, IL) was two for three, with an RBI, and Aly Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) had a double and an RBI against Thomas More.  Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS, MO) playing in her first game for Webster after missing the first four with an injury, was two for four with an RBI against the Saints.

In the win over Beloit, Franck had a successful pitching debut, going the distance and allowing six hits and no walks in seven innings, while striking out five.  Kayla Mahoney (SR, Fox HS, MO) was one for two, with two RBIs and a run scored.  Burczak was two for three, with a run scored, and Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) was one for two with an RBI.

Webster took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Mahoney singled in Burczak and Gibbs, and took second base on the throw home.  Samantha Powers (JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO) followed with a single to bring home Mahoney.  Franck made those three runs hold up, allowing just two Buccaneer runs (one earned) the rest of the way, both in the fourth inning.  Beloit scored after a triple brought home a runner who reached on an error, and a follow up single.

With the win, Webster improved to 3-3 on the season.

The Gorloks continue play in the Rebel Games with games vs. Muskingum University (OH) and Catholic University (D.C.) on March 9.  Webster plays the College of Mt. St. Joseph's (OH) and Transylvania University (KY) on March 10, before taking a day off on March 11.
