Gorloks Beat Beavers Twice, New Streak at Six

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The #15 nationallly ranked Webster University baseball team improved to 14-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 22-6 overall with a doubleheader sweep of Blackburn College, 8-1 and 6-4, on April 14 at GCS Ballpark.  After having a 13-game win streak snapped last week, the Gorloks have won six in a row.

Game one starter Isaac Behme (SO, Harrisburg HS, IL) went six innings to pick up his sixth win.  Behme allowed just three hits and a walk, while striking out five.  He leads the Gorloks in wins and is 6-2 on the season.

After falling behind, 1-0, in the first inning of game one, the Gorloks scored four runs in the third.  Joe Winckel (JR, North County HS, MO) doubled and Kevin Kojs (JR, Lincoln Way Central HS, IL) reached on a fielders choice on a sac bunt.  Shortstop Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) walked to load the bases and Winckel scored on a Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) ground out to third that forced Hall out at second.  Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) doubled in Kojs and Stevenson, and reached third on an error on the pitcher.  Stoulp scored the fourth run on a Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) ground out.

Webster scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, and added two more in the sixth, a Stevenson double being the big hit in the inning.  Taylor Stoulp wound up two for four, with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a stolen base.  Winckel was two for two, with two doubles, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.

The Gorloks had a tougher time in the game two, 6-4 win.  Webster jumped out in front in the first when Stevenson singled and stole second, and Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) walked.  Taylor Stoulp bunted them over to second and third and Stevenson scored on a wild pitch, with Lasky moving to third.  Rainbolt singled Lasky home for a 2-0 lead.  The Beavers tied it up with two in the second, but Webster pushed another run across in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

With Webster up 4-2 in the sixth, Blackburn knocked starter Cody Hafeli (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) out following a single, hit batsman, and a double, made it 4-4.  Ryan Martinez (SR, Illinois Valley CC) was summoned from the pen and promptly gave up a single.  Martinez got out of the inning without any further run scored when right fielder Max Morohashi (FR, Campbell Hall, CA) cut down the Beaver runner trying to score from second with a peg to catcher Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO).

In the seventh, Webster got the lead back for good when Taylor Stoulp walked and Rainbolt singled to lead off the inning.  Alex Kazmierski (SR, Triton College, IL) beat out a sac bunt attempt for a single, and the Blackburn pitcher's late throw wound up in the right field bullpen as Stoulp and Rainbolt circled the bases.

Jason Gray (SR, North Central CC, MO) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two, to earn his fourth save of the season.  Gray has not been scored on in 15 2/3 innings of relief in 2013.

Stevenson wound up two for three,  also reaching on an HBP and a walk, with three stolen bases.  Stevenson leads Webster with 23 steals on the season.  Rainbolt was two for five, with an RBI and run scored.

The Gorloks have single road games on April 17 at Greenville College (IL) and April 20 at Fontbonne University.  Webster is back home for a doubleheader with Fontbonne on April 21 at GCS Ballpark.
