Softball Drops Two at Washington U

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Taking a break in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule, the Webster University softball team played a doubleheader at Washington University on April 14.  The Bears prevailed in both contests, beating the Gorloks 6-2 and 7-1.

The 6-2 game one loss was highlighted by a two-run homer by Kayla Mahoney (SR, Fox HS, MO) in the top of the seventh inning, Webster's only runs in the game.  Starting pitcher Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) and the Gorloks were sailing along, tied 0-0 in the fifth when the Bears broke the deadlock with a solo home run.  The big damage came in Washington University's sixth when it banged out four consecutive hits with one out to score two runs, then a three-run homer with two out completed the five-spot.

Mahoney's home run broke the shutout in the seventh but was too little, too late for Webster.  Mahoney was one for three, with the HR and two RBIs. Kelley Bridgmon (JR, Seckman HS, MO) was two for three with a run scored and Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL) was one for two with a stolen base.

In game two, the Bears nicked starter Samantha Powers (JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO) for three unearned runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Webster cut the lead to 3-1 in the third.  With one out, Leah Sutton and Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS, MO) laid down bunt singles and Muntz singled up the middle.  Sutton scored when the Washington center fielder bobbled the ball.

The would turn out to be Webster's only tally.  The Bears tacked on four insurance runs, all unearned also, in the sixth inning to make it a 7-1 final.  Three Gorlok errors figured into both Bear rallies.  Powers allowed seven hits, two walks, and seven runs-all unearned-to fall to 3-2 on the season.  Franck was two for four and Gibbs was one for three with a double.

The Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, for a doubleheader with MacMurray College on April 15, to complete a six game stretch in four days for Webster.  On April 18, the team travels to Greenville College (IL) for a doubleheader with the Panthers.
