Box Score The Webster University baseball team defeated Fontnbonne University, 11-4, on April 19, at GCS Ballpark. In a game moved to GCS because of standing water at Shaw Park, the 10th-ranked Gorloks had a downpour of their own with a seven-run fourth inning to pull away for the win. Webster remains solid in first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 15-0 record.
The first two innings were plagued by four actual errors, three by the Gorloks, and mental mistakes as well, as the teams tied, 2-2. Strong, swirling winds played a part in several miscues and missed catches throughout the contest. Webster scratched out a run in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but blew the game wide open with a seven-run fourth.
Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) led off the inning with a solo blast, his first home run of the year, over the left field wall. Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) doubled and Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) singled him home. Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) and Mike Rainbolt ((SR, Kankakee CC, IL) followed with singles, scoring Lasky.
Stoulp scored when Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL) reached on an error. Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) then singled Rainbolt in and when the ball skipped by the Fontbonne center fielder, Hall circled the bases, scoring behind Buchanan to make it a 10-2 lead.
Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO) started on the mound for Webster and went five innings, giving up two unearned runs. He won his fifth game of the season, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out one, as he improved to 5-2. Kevin Lashley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) took over and pitched the sixth and seventh, retiring all six batters he faced, striking out two. Korie Vire (FR, Georgetown Ridge Farm HS, IL) finished up and, after a scoreless eighth, got touched for two runs in the ninth with a couple 'wind-aided' hits coming into play.
Bonds was three for three, with a home run, double, two RBIs, and a run scored. He was an elusive triple away from hitting for the cycle. Lasky was three for five, with three runs scored, a double, RBI, and a stolen base. Hall was three for four, with a walk, run scored, and two RBIs, and Taylor Stoulp was three for five with a run scored. The Gorloks banged out 16 hits in the game.
Webster has won seven in and row and is 23-6 overall on the season. The Gorloks and Griffins will be back at GCS Ballpark for a night doubleheader on April 21 with game one starting at 6:00 p.m.
