Box Score The 10th-ranked Webster University baseball team won its 11th straight, winning 10-7 at Washington University, on April 24. The Gorloks built a 7-0 lead in the first three innings, literally running away with the contest, as they stole eight bases in the process. Webster improves to 27-6 on the season with the win.
Webster was up 3-0 after one inning. Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) walked to lead off, Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) singled, and Stevenson and Lasky pulled a double steal. Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) tripled them both in and he scored on a Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) groundout.
The Gorloks made it 5-0 in the second. Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) singled and stole second and third. Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) followed with a double to score Bonds, and then stole third. Stevenson walked, and Hall and Stevenson pulled a double steal of home and second. Stevenson stole third for good measure, but wound up stranded.
In the third, Alex Kazmierski (SR, Triton College, IL) singled and took third on a Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL) single, with Turner taking second on the throw to third. Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO) singled them both home to make it 7-0. Webster made it 10-0 in the fifth when Turner singled, and with two out, Foege doubled. Hall reached on an error on the shortstop, with Turner scoring and Foege taking third. Stevenson singled home Foege and Lasky singled home Hall with the third run of the inning.
The Bears scored in fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to close within 10-7. Starter Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO) gave up a run in the fifth and after giving up a triple and two singles with one out in the sixth, Ryan Martinez (SR, Illinois Valley CC) relieved for the final two outs. Martinez allowed two runs on three straight singles to start the seventh, and when Washington U threatened again in the eighth with a lead-off single, Jason Gray (JR, North Central HS, MO) was called on.
Gray walked two in a row to load the bases with no one out, but coaxed a groundout with one run scoring, and a second run scored after an errant throw by Stoulp on a double-play attempt. The run was the first allowed on the season for Gray, but he has yet to allow an earned run as his ERA stands at 0.00 for 20 innings pitched.
Dooley went five and a third innings, allowing six hits, a walk, and three runs, for the win. He is 6-2 on the year.
Webster banged out 16 hits for the game. Stevenson was two for three with three stolen bases, two walks, and an RBI. He now has 29 steals for the season. Stoulp was two for five, with a double, triple, and two RBIs. Foege wound up two for five with a double and two RBIs and Bonds was two for five also, with two stolen bases.
Webster is ranked 10th nationally in the latest D3Baseball.com poll and edged up to 12th in the latest ABCA national poll.
The Gorloks have a three-game series this weekend in Louisville, KY, when they take on Spalding University on April 27-28. Webster then travels to Normal, IL, to face Illinois State University. The NCAA I Redbirds are 24-16 on the season.
