Golden Eagles Win Opener, 2-1, Over Gorloks

Box Score The Webster University baseball team dropped a pitcher's duel to Spalding University, 2-1, in seven innings at Louisville, KY, on April 27.  The loss was Webster's first in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2013.  Game two of a scheduled doubleheader was rained out and will be part of a doubleheader on April 28 at Spalding.

Isaac Behme (SO, Harrisburg HS, IL) got the start for Webster and allowed two runs, just one earned, over six innings.  Behme gave up four hits and four walks, while striking out nine Eagles.  Spalding scored both its runs in the fourth, needing only one hit as two walks and two errors helped fuel the rally.

Webster closed to within 2-1 in the sixth when Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) and Alex Kazmierski (SR, Triton College, IL) had singles with one down.  Joe Winckel (JR, North County HS, MO) singled Rainbolt in for the Gorloks lone run.  After a fly out, Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) loaded the bases when he was hit with a pitch, but the Gorloks left the bases full.

Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) led off with a single in the seventh, was sacrificed over, and a hit by pitch on Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) gave the Gorloks runners at first and second with one out.  But the next two Gorloks went in order and Spalding gave Webster its first loss in the SLIAC as they fell to 18-1.

Behme took the loss and fell to 7-3 on the season.  Rainbolt was three for four, with a stolen base and a run scored.  Webster stranded 10 base runners in the contest.

Webster is 27-7 on the season.  The Gorloks have the doubleheader at Spalding on April 28 and will travel to Normal, IL, on May 1 to take on NCAA I opponent Illinois State University.
