Gorloks Batter Bears for 35 Hits/Settle for Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University baseball team's offense opened up full throttle in a game one, 19-7, spanking of the Washington University Bears but it had to settle for a split as it dropped the nightcap, 8-6, in Clayton, MO, on April 6.  Webster's offense muscled up for 35 hits and 25 runs in the double dip but saw its 13-game win streak go by the boards after the second game loss.

in the 19-7 game one victory, the Gorloks pounded out 25 hits, seven of them for extra-bases.  The 25 hits were the most for Webster since it banged out 28 in a game against Lincoln Christian College in 2007.  The 19 runs were the most for Webster since a 2003 game vs. Hannibal LaGrange College.  Eight of the nine Webster batters in the starting lineup had two or more hits, and eight scored two or more runs.  Four Gorloks finished with three RBIs for the game.

The Gorloks actually fell behind, 4-1, after the Bears scored four runs in the third off starter Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO).  Webster roared back with seven runs in the top of the fourth as they banged out eight hits to take a 8-4 lead.

A lead off home run by Alex Kazmierski (SR, Triton College, IL) was followed by a Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL) double and a Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) single.  Catcher Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO) cleared the bases with a three-run homer.  Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL)  tripled home Kevin Kojs ( after he had reached on an error.  Lasky scored on a ground out by Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) and Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) and Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL) followed with singles.  Kazmierski singled for his second hit of the inning to load the bases.  Turner had a hit into right field but Kazmierski was forced out at second as Rainbolt scored.

After Dooley allowed two singles to start the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Martinez (SR, Illinois Valley CC, IL) was summoned from the bullpen.  Martinez allowed a walk and a single as the Bears scored three and closed within a run, 8-7.  After that it was smooth sailing for Martinez, who allowed just two hits and one walk the final five innings to pick up the win, his first of the year.

Webster scored five more runs in the fifth, and three in the seventh and eighth innings.  Kazmierski hit his second home run, a two-run shot, in the seventh.  He leads the Gorloks with four on the season.  Lasky finished with two triples in the game and Turner had two doubles.

The normally reliable starting tandem of Dooley and Cody Hafeli (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) had tough outings, and Hafeli had an early shower in game two as well.  Webster built a 5-0 lead and it looked like a sweep was in the making.  In the second inning Stoulp walked and catcher Joe Winckel (JR, North County HS, MO) singled.  After both moved up on a passed ball, a two-out single by Lasky brought them home.

In the third, Stoulp walked, Rainbolt reached on an error, and Turner singled in Stoulp.  Winckel singled in Rainbolt and Bonds walked to load them up.  A two-out walk to Kojs sent Turner home for the third run of the inning and a 5-0 lead.  But the Bears scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Hafeli allowed five hits and two walks before giving way to Buchanan with one out.  Buchanan was touched for two singles and when the smoke cleared the Bears led, 7-5.  Washington U. added a run in the fifth but Webster could only manage a single run in the sixth for the 8-6 final.

Rainbolt wound up six for 10 on the day, with three runs scored and four RBIs.  He leads Webster with a .388 average and also in RBIs with 20 on the season.  Lasky was six for 11, with four runs, three RBIS, and two triples on the afternoon.  The 53 at-bats in game one ties Webster's all-time high, reached in a game against Lincoln Christian in 2006.  The Webster box for the 19 run, 25 hit attack is below.
