Box Score 2 A stellar starting effort by Isaac Behme (SO, Harrisburg HS, IL) in the opener, and a thrilling come from behind rally in the ninth in game two helped the Webster University baseball team take a doubleheader from Greenville College, 3-1 and 5-4, at GCS Ballpark, on April 9. Behme allowed one hit over 6 1/3 innings in the game one win, and a walk-off single by Alex Kazmierski (SR, Triton College, IL) capped the ninth inning rally for Webster in game two.
With the two victories, Webster remains unbeaten in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 10-0, but it was looking like the Gorloks would suffer their first SLIAC blemish in the nightcap. Webster had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) lead-off walk, a Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) triple plating Stevenson, and a groundout by Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO), scoring Lasky.
Greenville tagged starter Schneider (JR, Warren Township HS, IL) for three runs in the second, the big blow being a two-run homer, to take a 3-2 lead. After an unearned run in the top of the ninth off reliever Jason Gray (SR, North Central CC, MO), Greenville led 4-2 heading into Webster's last at-bat.
The Gorloks didn't waste any time loading the bases with no one out. Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) walked, pinch hitter Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL) singled, and pinch hitter Charlie Gandolfi (SO, Mundelein HS, IL) got a bunt hit on a sacrifice attempt to load them up. A HBP on Stevenson sent Hall home to make it 4-3. After a fly out by Lasky, Taylor Stoulp singled to right, scoring Buchanan and tying it up, 4-4. With two out, Kazmierski drove a single through the left side to score Gandolfi with the game-winning run.
The hit made a winner out of Dylan Dean Smith (JR, Edwards County HS, IL) who had come on to retire the final out in the Greenville ninth on a strikeout. Smith is 2-0 on the season. Schneider, making his second start of the season, allowed four hits, two earned runs, and struck out two in his six innings of work. Schneider missed the entire 2012 season with an arm injury.
In game one, Behme allowed just one hit and one walk in his 6 1/3 innings, in the seven inning tilt. He allowed his only run after a lead off triple by the Panthers in the fourth, and a sac fly. Behme struck out six in the game. Gray came on in the seventh and got the last two batters out to pick up his third save of the season.
Webster took a 1-0 lead in the first when Stevenson led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a Taylor Stoulp single to right. The stolen base was Stevenson's 20th in 20 attempts on the season. The Gorloks scored a run without a hit in the third inning after Lasky walked, took third on an errant pick off throw and scored on a groundout by Taylor Stoulp. They scored their last run in the seventh after back to back to back singles by Buchanan, Hall, and Gandolfi sent Buchanan home.
The Gorloks are ranked 15th in the nation in the NCAA III in the most recent D3Baseball.com poll and are 18th in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll. Webster improved to 18-6 overall with the sweep.
The Gorloks have a busy weekend, first traveling to Carlinville, IL, to play two games on April 13. Webster will play single games vs host Blackburn College and MacMurray College. On April 14, they are back at GCS to play a doubleheader vs. Blackburn.
