Gorloks' Two Wins Led by Thompson's 6th ShO

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) threw her sixth shutout of the season to lead the Webster University softball team to an 8-0 win in game one of a doubleheader sweep of Principia College (IL) at Blackburn Park on April 9.  The Gorloks ended both contests in five innings, winning 11-3, in the nightcap.

Thompson is 6-5 on the year, and all six wins have been whitewashes.  She allowed only one hit in the five inning affair, walking none, and striking out eight.  The only other runner to reach base was a hit batsman.  In the process, she lowered her season ERA to 1.93 and has racked up 109 strikeouts in only 83 1/3 innings pitched.

Webster broke open a 0-0 game in the third when it scored four runs.  After Aly Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) had doubled home Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL) with one out, Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) singled to put runners at first and third.  Kaytlin Burczak (SR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL) followed with a three-run blast to left center fied for her second home run of the year.  Burczak is tied with Taylor Gibbs (SO, Alton HS, IL) with 15 RBIs for the team lead.

The Gorloks added four more runs in the fourth on four singles, a walk, and an error.  Burczak finished one for three, Watson was two for three with two doubles, Gibbs two for three with an RBI, and Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS, MO) two for three with a run and a stolen base.

In game two, Principia struck first with an unearned run off starter Franck in the first inning.  The Gorloks came right back and scored four of their own as they batted around.  Watson and Kayla Mahoney (SR, Fox HS, MO) both had two-run singles as Webster had four hits, and received four walks and a hit batsman.  Webster struck again in the second, scoring three on a three-run homer by Gibbs, her team-leading fourth of the season.

A lead-off double in the fourth by Muntz, and two-out run scoring singles by Leah Sutton (FR, Woodlawn HS, IL) and Mahoney fueled a three run inning.   Watson doubled in the final run in the fifth.  Muntz was three for three, reaching base four times, with three runs scored in the game.  She was four for five on the day, with four runs scored.  Gibbs wound up one for two, with two runs scored, and was two for four and was four for seven in the twin bill, with three doubles.

Franck departed after three innings and gave way to Samantha Powers ((JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO).  Powers got into a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fifth, but got out of it with just one run scoring.  Franck improved to 6-1 on the season.

Webster is 3-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 14-7 overall.  The Gorloks host a rare Friday night doubleheader as they take on Eureka College (IL) at Blackburn Park.  The team then takes that short trip down Big Bend to face Washington University on April 14.
