Redbirds Shutout Gorloks, Snap Win Streak

Box Score The 10th-ranked Webster University baseball team took a break from its conference schedule to take on Illinois State University, and the Redbirds shut down the Gorloks, 10-0, on May 1in Normal, IL.  The seven-inning loss to the NCAA I Redbirds snapped Webster's 11-game win streak.  Webster is 29-8 overall on the season.

Webster managed just one hit off Illinois State.  Redbirds starter Steve Heilenbach was too much for the Gorloks, retiring the first 18 batters he faced.  A Charlie Gandolfi (SO, Mundelein HS, IL) pinch hit to lead off the seventh inning was the only Gorlok runner to reach base.

Dylan Dean Smith (JR, Edwards County HS, IL) had the starting assignment for Webster and went four and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks, and striking out two.  The loss was Smith's first of the season, falling to 4-1 on the year.

While Webster's 11-game streak was snapped, Illinois State, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, won its 10th straight contest.

The Gorloks are 20-1 in the SLIAC, having clinched their seventh straight league title and the #1 seed in the conference tournament.  The tournament runs from May 9-11 in Highland, IL.  Webster ends regular season play this weekend, starting with a 7:00 p.m. game vs Principia College (IL) at GCS Ballpark on May 3.  The team travels to Principia on May 4 for a double header.
