Baseball Wins SLIAC Opener, 14-5, Over Fontbonne

Box Score The Webster University baseball team won its first round contest, defeating Fontbonne University, 14-5, at Glik Park in Highland, IL, on May 9, in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.  The 12th-ranked Gorloks built up an 8-0 lead, and were able to withstand a Griffin five-run sixth inning rally to take the win.

Webster took a 3-0 lead in the third when back to back triples by Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) and Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL), were sandwiched by Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO) and Taylor Stoulp (JR, St. Mary's HS, MO) singles.

The Gorloks added two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to build the lead to 8-0.  Four straight singles by Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL), Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO), Hall, and Stevenson, led to two runs in the fourth.  Four straight singles in the fifth, by Stoulp, Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL), Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL), and Bonds, plated three more to make it 8-0.

The Griffins made it a game when they scored five runs, four unearned, in the sixth inning.  Fontbonne had five hits in the inning, helped kept alive by a Webster error, chasing starter Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO).  Ryan Martinez (SR, Normal West HS, IL) was summoned to put out the fire for the Gorloks, getting the third out in the inning.  Martinez pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.

A six-run eighth by Webster left little double as to the outcome of the game and Jason Gray (JR, North Central CC, MO) threw a scoreless ninth. Dooley went five and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and one earned run, walking none and striking out eight.  He won his team-leading eighth game, and is 8-2 on the season.

The Gorloks finished with 19 hits, with the two triples their only extra-base hits in the game.  The Gorloks had five stolen bases on the afternoon.  Stoulp was three for three, with two runs, two stolen bases, and an RBI.  Lasky was three for five with two runs, a triple, stolen base, and RBI, and Hall was three for five, with three RBIs and two runs.  Stevenson wound up three for six, with two RBIs, two runs, and a triple.

Webster, 30-8 on the season, is scheduled to play a second round contest as the tournament continues on Friday, May 10. The Gorloks will meet the winner of the Spalding University/Westminster College first round match-up at 5:00 p.m..
