Gorloks Dispatch Bears With 9-Run Eighth, 23-7

Box Score The 6th-ranked Webster University baseball team defeated the Washington University Bears, 23-7, on March 21, in Clayton, MO.  The Gorloks battered six Bear pitchers for 23 hits and 22 runs...despite trailing in the game entering the eighth inning.

Webster, down 7-6 after seven innings, erupted for nine runs on eight hits in the eighth inning, then added seven more in the ninth on six hits.  In addition to the 22 hits, the Gorloks had five runners reach via hit by pitch, and five more via errors by three different Bear third basemen in the contest.

The 23 runs were the most for Webster since scoring 23 in a contest vs. Principia College (IL) on April 9, 2011, and the 22 hits were the most since banging out 25 in a contest just last April 6, at Washington U.

In the sixth, Jarrod Turner (SR, Springfield, IL/Chatham Glenwood HS) and Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) singled, and Ian Foege (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) who started a huge offensive day quietly with a sac fly in the fourth, hit a hot shot off the Bear third baseman scoring Turner.  Kojs came around to score on a wild throw home to try to nip Turner, making it 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Washington U knocked out starter Isaac Behme (JR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) after he gave up a pair of singles and a double.  After reliever Brett Buchanan (SR, Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) gave up a single and threw a wild pitch, Dylan Dean Smith (SR,  Albion, IL/Edwards County HS), normally a starter, was brought in to quash the rally.  Smith got the final out, but only after a pickoff attempt at first base resulted in a steal of home by a runner at third, making it a 6-4 deficit.

Lasky and Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS) walked in the seventh, and another Bear error by their third baseman scored Lasky. A Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) single scored Hall to tie it, 6-6.  In the bottom of the 7th, a Washington U leadoff triple and groundout off Smith, gave them a 7-6 lead.

Then came the Gorlok eighth.  Kojs singled, Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) pinch ran, and a Foege home run to left center made it 8-7 Gorloks.  Freshman Matt Wollnik (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) singled, Hall was HBP, and then a Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) double made it 10-7.  Another Bear 3B error on Winckel and a bloop single by Turner made it 11-7.

Gandolfi was HBP to load the bases, and a Foege single to left drove in two more to make it 13-7.  After a wild pitch moved Gandolfi and Foege up, a Wollnik two-run single made it 15-7.

In the ninth, Taylor Stoulp led off with a double, Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Jefferson College) was HBP, and after a force at second left runners at the corners, pinch hitter Max Morohashi (SO, Encino, CA/Campbell Hall) blasted a three-run shot to make it 18-7.  Gandolfi was HBP again and pinch hitter Zach Allam (SO, Bloomington, IN/Edgewood HS) doubled.  Wollnik's third hit in two innings made it 19-7, Webster.

Jordan Stoulp (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had a pinch hit single, scoring Allam.  A Hall single loaded the bases and pinch hitter Brett Jungles (FR, Naperville, IL/St. Francis HS), hit into a force out at third, but reached on another Bear 3B throwing error as Wollnik and Hall scored, making it 22-7.  Jungles scored the last run of the game on a wild pitch, to make it 23-7.

For the contest, Webster pinch hitters were 3-4, with a home run, two doubles, and three runs scored.  Foege was 2-3, with a home run, five RBIs, and two runs scored.  Taylor Stoulp was 2-5, with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored.  Kojs was 3-4 with a double and run scored.  Wollnik was 3-6, with three RBIs and two runs scored and Turner was 3-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.  Eight Gorloks had two or more hits on the afternoon.

Smith wound up throwing two full innings, allowing a hit, two walks, and a run, and picking up the win.  He is now 2-0 on the season.  Freshman Trey Tigart (Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) made his pitching debut for Webster, finishing up the game with an inning and a third, allowing two hits and striking out one.  Behme, who is struggling in the early going this season, went 5 1/3, giving up seven hits, two walks, and five runs, striking out two.

Webster is 6-2 on the season. The Gorloks have a busy schedule this weekend making their home debut in 2014 at GCS Ballpark.  Webster faces #14 ranked Concordia University (IL) at 12:00 on March 22, and the College of St. Scholastica (MN) at 10:00 a.m. and Illinois Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m., on March 23.

On March 26, the Gorloks open play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a game vs Blackburn College at GCS.
