Cougar Rally in Ninth Dooms Gorloks

Box Score A three-run ninth by the #12 ranked Concordia University Cougars sank the #6 Webster University baseball team as the Gorloks fell, 3-2, on March 22 at GCS Ballpark.  Webster was cruising, taking a 2-0 lead into the ninth, but three different Gorlok pitchers couldn't hold the lead.

Chris Jansen (JR, Cicero, IN/St. Joseph's College) made his third start of the season and had thrown eight shutout innings.  But Jansen gave up a single, hit batsman, and a bunt single to load the bases with Cougars with none out in the ninth.

Closer Jason Gray (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS) was called on to put out the fire.  After striking out the first batter, Gray gave up a single up the box, scoring two to tie the game.  After Gray hit a batter to load the bases back up, Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) was called on.

Smith coaxed a fly to right that Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) tracked down at the wall, and a perfect peg by Gandolfi nailed the Cougar runner trying to take second for a 9-6 DP, but the go ahead run had scored.

Webster took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) led off with a double, took third on a ground out, and scored on a sac fly by Ian Foege (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS).  Foege walked in the fifth and scored on a two-out double by Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson HS) to make it 2-0 Webster.

That was Winckel's third double of the season as he upped his season average to .389.

Jansen went eight innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, while striking out six.  His season record fell to 1-1 with the loss.

The Gorloks are 6-3 on the season and will play a pair of game at GCS on March 23.  Webster will face the College of St. Scholastica (MN) at 10:00 a.m. and Illinois Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m.
