Box Score The Webster University softball team powered its way into its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule, scoring 30 runs and banging out 33 hits in a doubleheader win at Eureka College (IL) on March 22. The Gorloks won 12-7 and 18-11 over the Red Devils, to start 2-0 in the SLIAC.
In game one, Webster raced to a 7-1 lead and coasted to a 12-7 final. Molly Muntz (SR, Streator, IL/Streator HS) was 5-5, with three RBIs, a double and two runs scored. Muntz, a converted outfielder, has taken over the catching duties for the Gorloks in 2014 and has done an outstanding job backstopping for the team.
Sophomore Erin McGinnis (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) was 4-4, with a double and two runs, and Rachel Franck (SO, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) was 3-5, with two stolen bases and two runs. Webster had 19 hits, and scored in six of the seven innings.
Samantha Powers (SR, Manchester, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) started on the mound and picked up the win, going five innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, and six strikeouts. She is 3-2 on the season with the win.
While winning game two, 18-11, the final score did not reflect the battle the Gorloks staged to win. After pulling to a 6-0, then 10-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Red Devils scored six in the bottom half of the inning to tie it, then took an 11-10 lead in the fifth.
With two out and the bases loaded for the Gorloks in the sixth, freshman Emily Kolisch (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) singled in two runs to put Webster back on top, 12-11. A single by freshman Amber Sinamon (St. Louis, MO/Affton HS), two walks, and a double by Muntz later, the Gorloks led 16-11.
Franck wound up 2-3, with four runs, a stolen base, and an RBI. McGinnis was 3-4 with three RBIs, three runs, and a triple. Going 7-8 in the twin bill, McGinnis is now batting .526 on the season and leads the SLIAC in batting average.
Kallie Federhofer (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) was 2-3, with two RBIs and a double. Taylor Gibbs (JR, Alton, IL/Alton HS) was 2-3, with three runs, a triple and an RBI, and Kolisch finished 2-5, with three RBIs. Powers was 1-3, with three RBIs, a double, and two runs.
Franck was the winning pitcher in relief of Powers in game two. Franck went 2 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit, no runs, and striking out five. She is now 3-2 on the season.
The Gorloks return home to face perennial power DePauw University (IN) on March 25 at Blackburn Park. Webster is back in action in the SLIAC with a doubleheader at Fontbonne University on March 27.
