Box Score 2 The Webster University baseball team took two games at GCS on March 23. A Charlie Gandolfi walk-off single gave the Gorloks a 3-2 win in 10 innings over the College of St. Scholastica (MN) in the opener and Zach Schneider threw seven shutout innings as Webster beat Illinois Wesleyan University, 7-0, in the finale. The Gorlok offense muscled up for two home runs against the Titans.
In the Webster 10th vs. Scholastica, Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) reached after being hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Zach Allam (SO, Bloomington, IN/Edgewood HS).
Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS), who had entered the game as a defensive replacement for Kevin Kojs (SR, New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central HS) in the 8th, hit the first pitch inside the third base line into the left field corner to score Stoulp with the game winner.
Freshman C.J. Lee (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) made his first start as a Gorlok and left with a 2-1 lead after 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, one earned, and striking out six. Brett Buchanan (SR, Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) relieved Lee and got the final two outs in the seventh, with the tying run scoring on ground out, to make it 2-2.
Scholastica had a shot at taking the lead in the top of the 8th. After a leadoff double, Buchanan allowed a single to center. Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson HS) threw to cut-off man shortstop Matt Wollnik (FR, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS), who threw out the Saint runner at plate as Ian Foege (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) blocked the plate perfectly.
Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) relieved with one out, and got the final two outs. Smith wound up going the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing no hits or runs, with one strikeout. He picked up the win for his efforts, and is now 3-0 on the season.
The Gorloks had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on a one out double by Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS) and an RBI single by Stoulp. Webster scored another single run in the sixth on a Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Jefferson College) double, a Saints error, and came home on a ground out double play. Scholastica had scored a single run in the third and then tied it with the run in the seventh.
Against Wesleyan, Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS), making his second start of the season, went seven innings, giving up just two hits and two walk, no runs, and struck out three. He improved to 2-0 on the season. Schneider has a 0.00 ERA for 13 innings pitched in 2014.
Freshman Matt Goro (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) took over in the eighth and retired the Titans, 1-2-3. Jason Gray (SR, St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) finished up in a scoreless ninth.
Schneider was staked to a 2-0 lead in the second. Kojs and Gandolfi led off with singles, with Kojs taking third. Gandolfi swiped second and a wild pitch scored Kojs and moved Gandolfi to third. Gandolfi came home on a Zach Allam (SO, Bloomington, IN/Edgewood HS) single to make it 2-0.
In the third, Stoulp walked, stole second, and a Kojs single plated him for a 3-0 lead. Stoulp homered to lead off the fifth inning and Lasky launched a three-run blast in the eighth, following an Allam walk and Wollnik single to make it 7-0.
Lasky wound up 2-5, with a home run and three RBIs. Kojs was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored and Stoulp was 1-3, with a home run, RBI, and run scored. He finished the day 4-7, with two RBIs and two runs scored, lifting his season average to .341.
On March 26, the Gorloks open play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a game vs Blackburn College at GCS.
